A. High-Frequency Words

Words such as a, the, an, some, and, see, like, go, say are words that occur often in books. So it is important for the beginning reader to recognize these words automatically, by sight. However, the words, at first, are beyond the phonics skills of the reader, especially the pre-alphabetic reader. To help the reader recognize the word, it is important to use the high frequency words in meaningful contexts with pictures and puppets.

Directions for Teacher: Write the sentence starter and leave a blank to fill in different words that make sense. This is a good strategy for teaching high-frequency words in a meaningful context.
